Since there was no way I was about to tell Olivia she needed to hurry up and finish her story before Carlton arrived, I decided to save time by listening to what she had to say without asking for clarification.
Fortunately, the rest of her story was pretty clear.
Olivia said she told Tiffany she would accept her challenge and think about adopting her baby, if Tiffany would go home and spend the next two weeks considering all her options for keeping the baby.
âShe agreed to do that, so we exchanged phone numbers, and I promised to give her a call next Saturday. Iâm telling you, Titus, ever since I left the clinic, all Iâve been able to think about is what it might be like to be a mother.â
âI imagine so.â
âSo, whatâs your opinion? Do you think Iâd be a good mother?â
I avoided answering the question by pointing out the obvious. âHow could you possibly think about adopting a baby when you have a career that requires you to be available 24/7?â
âWhatâs that got to do with it? Lots of people have those kinds of jobs, and they manage to have children. Look at your own situation. Youâre adopting Eleanor, and youâre out of the country half the time.â
âYes, but Nikkiâs available for her when Iâm gone.â
She stared at me for several seconds without saying a word.
âYou donât think Iâd be a good mother, do you, Titus?â
I took a deep breath. âYouâre wrong, Olivia. As long as you were depending on God to help you raise the child, I think youâd be a great mother; the best mother ever.â
She bowed her head and buried her face in her hands. After a few seconds, I realized she was crying.
I wasnât sure what to do.
Just when I was about to reach out and pat her on the shoulder, she looked up at me and smiled. âThank you for saying that, Titus. Thatâs exactly what Iâve been thinking. I know I can do this, as long as I donât try to do it myself. I really believe with Godâs help, I could be a good mother to that little baby.â
She picked up her coffee mug and walked over to the kitchen. A few seconds later, I saw her grab a paper towel and dab away her tears.
I gave her a second or two, and then I got up and walked over to the kitchen. âLetâs be practical for a minute, Olivia. Since this is a private adoption, Iâm sure you realize youâll need to get an attorney who specializes in adoption.â
âOf course I know that. Iâve already been making some calls.â
âIâll be out of the country on Saturday; otherwise, Iâd insist you call me and let me know how things turn out with Tiffany.â
âYes, I know. Youâll be in Beirut, wonât you?â
