Since there was no way I was about to tell Olivia she needed to hurry up and finish her story before Carlton arrived, I decided to save time by listening to what she had to say without asking for clarification.

Fortunately, the rest of her story was pretty clear.

Olivia said she told Tiffany she would accept her challenge and think about adopting her baby, if Tiffany would go home and spend the next two weeks considering all her options for keeping the baby.

“She agreed to do that, so we exchanged phone numbers, and I promised to give her a call next Saturday. I’m telling you, Titus, ever since I left the clinic, all I’ve been able to think about is what it might be like to be a mother.”

“I imagine so.”

“So, what’s your opinion? Do you think I’d be a good mother?”

I avoided answering the question by pointing out the obvious. “How could you possibly think about adopting a baby when you have a career that requires you to be available 24/7?”

“What’s that got to do with it? Lots of people have those kinds of jobs, and they manage to have children. Look at your own situation. You’re adopting Eleanor, and you’re out of the country half the time.”

“Yes, but Nikki’s available for her when I’m gone.”

She stared at me for several seconds without saying a word.

“You don’t think I’d be a good mother, do you, Titus?”

I took a deep breath. “You’re wrong, Olivia. As long as you were depending on God to help you raise the child, I think you’d be a great mother; the best mother ever.”

She bowed her head and buried her face in her hands. After a few seconds, I realized she was crying.

I wasn’t sure what to do.

Just when I was about to reach out and pat her on the shoulder, she looked up at me and smiled. “Thank you for saying that, Titus. That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. I know I can do this, as long as I don’t try to do it myself. I really believe with God’s help, I could be a good mother to that little baby.”

She picked up her coffee mug and walked over to the kitchen. A few seconds later, I saw her grab a paper towel and dab away her tears.

I gave her a second or two, and then I got up and walked over to the kitchen. “Let’s be practical for a minute, Olivia. Since this is a private adoption, I’m sure you realize you’ll need to get an attorney who specializes in adoption.”

“Of course I know that. I’ve already been making some calls.”

“I’ll be out of the country on Saturday; otherwise, I’d insist you call me and let me know how things turn out with Tiffany.”

“Yes, I know. You’ll be in Beirut, won’t you?”
